- Full title: Residential Renovation towards nearly zero energy CITIES
- Project Call: FP7 E2B PPP 2012. 7th EU Framework Programme.
- Main aim: Develop innovating technology for energy saving and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
- Participating Cities: Valladolid, Genoa, Kartal-Istanbul
The R2Cities Project, Residential Renovation towards nearly zero energy CITIES, has as its main aim to develop innovating technology for energy saving and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
The planned energy efficiency measures will focus on three points: heat consumption reduction through insulation improvements and the implementation of ICT-based monitoring systems; the reduction of electricity consumption through the use of sensors in common areas, more efficient lighting equipment and detailed billing; and the reduction of CO2 emissions through renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaic, solar thermal and biomass boilers.
The project includes the implementation of several demonstrators, expected in the cities of Valladolid (Spain), Genoa (Italy) and Kartal-Istanbul (Turkey). Overall, the planned methodology was evaluated over 57,000 square meters of residential buildings in areas with different climate conditions and different resident lifestyles.
In Valladolid actions will take place in the “Cuatro de Marzo” suburb, where initially 30 buildings will be refurbished. In total, 300 homes will be acted on that accommodate some 550 residents.
The project, which lasts four years , is co-funded by the EU’s VII PM.
